Propane Gas Safety
Propane is safe when it is installed, serviced, and handled correctly. Read this before you need it — and if you smell gas right now, follow the steps below first.
If you suspect a gas leak
- Get away from the area immediately.
- From a remote location, call 911.
- Then call Elite Gas: (772) 341-9262.
Do not switch anything on or off, use a phone inside the affected area, or try to find the leak yourself.

Propane gas can cause a fire or explosion resulting in death or serious injury so it’s important to be aware that:
- Leaking propane gas may cause a fire or explosion if ignited.
- Propane gas is naturally odorless. The “rotten eggs” odor that is added may fade or diminish so that it is not detectable by smell.
- Propane gas is odorized by law to warn of gas leaks. Do not rely on your sense of smell alone. Elite Gas recommends that you consider installing one or more propane gas detectors.
- If you suspect leaking gas, immediately get away from the area and call 911 or your propane supplier from a remote location.
- For outdoor use only. Never install a propane tank inside a building or enclosed area.
- Check for leaks and service REGULARLY by a qualified propane gas technician.
- If there has been any interruption to your propane gas service, contact your gas supplier to check the system and restart your appliances.
- Do not attempt to repair your tank. Only trained and qualified propane gas technicians should install, purge, fill, service, repair, or dispose of your tank or propane gas system.
Don’t rely on your nose
The “rotten egg” odorant added to propane can fade, and some people simply cannot smell it. A leak you cannot smell is still a leak.

Regular service is the best prevention
Most propane emergencies are avoidable. A qualified technician can find a weeping fitting, a corroded regulator, or a line that has shifted long before it becomes a hazard — and after any interruption to your service, the system needs checking before appliances are restarted.
